Skype has been one of the most widely used VoIP service and app since the past couple of years, reaching its pinnacle of more than half a billion users. But recently its user base has declined to around 300 million with the onset of more smarter and intuitive programs. Skype is presently owned by Microsoft which has made permanent deletion of Skype accounts much more difficult.
Deleting a Skype account permanently is a step-by-step method that includes following a number of procedures.
There is no quick procedure for closing your user account on Skype permanently. This guide will help you to delete your Skype account correctly:
Remove personal information on Skype:
According to the guidelines of Microsoft, a Skype username is removed from its directory after a period of 30 days even after deletion. So if you want your name to not appear on Skype searches, it is recommended that you remove all your personal information on Skype.
Change profile picture: To change/ remove your current display click on My Info then Profile picture and select Remove.
Set status to Offline/ Invisible: This step makes sure that people don’t be see you on Skype anymore. To change your status click on My Info → Status and then set your status to offline or invisible with a mood message.
Additionally remove personal information except your email address which will be necessary to verify the user account while shutting it.
Sign out of all other devices: It is recommended that you sign out of Skype on all other devices that you previously logged in from. To do that simply type the command /remote logout on a chat window and then sign out of your current device.
Unlink Microsoft account from Skype account:
It is very important to unlink your Microsoft account from your Skype account as deleting any Skype account deletes the Microsoft account linked with it which you may not want as your Microsoft account is the key link to all Microsoft services.
Sign in to your Skype account from any web browser at Skype.com
Tap on account settings and then scroll down to the bottom portion of the page to find Account Settings under Settings and preferences
Click Unlink option next to your Microsoft account.
Click Continue when the confirmation dialogue appears. Your Microsoft account is unlinked from your Skype account.
Cancel all active subscriptions:
Cancel your Skype subscriptions by going to Account settings on any web browser then click on the subscriptions that you wish to cancel on the blue bar displayed on the left hand side. Now click on Cancel Subscriptions and then click on Thanks but no thanks, I still want to cancel. This confirms your subscription cancellations.
Cancel your Skype Number:
If you have an active Skype number it is recommended to cancel it before you close your account. Click on Skype Number in the Manage features section, now click Settings and then Cancel Skype Number. This won’t cancel your number right away the number remains active till its expiry period after which Microsoft retain sit for 90 days in case if you wish to purchase that same number in that period.
Remove all recurring payments:
Disable your Skype auto recharge before closing your account. go to Account Details→ Billing & Payment then click Disable under Auto Recharge section.
After following these steps properly you are required to contact Skype Customer Service and notify them that you’d like to have your account closed permanently. The deletion process takes up to 30 days after which people won’t be able to find your account on Skype.
